I'd really like to hear from somebody like you about why Apple have
been so reluctant to develop a product in Photoshop's market?
Me, too. Anybody have some ideas?
Purely guesses from a developer perspective, but the following cross my mind:
1) Resources and expertise. Apple is trying to do many, many things
at once. Photoshop is Adobe's headline product. It's hard to
gather the expertise and fund it to the same level under those circumstances.
2) For similar reasons, lack of focus. Adobe is focused. Apple
is tying to a wide spectrum of things, and too often fails to
sustain new directions for more than a year or two (remember OpenDoc ?
How many goes at a protected memory, multitasking Operating System did
Apple have a go at before buying NextStep ? It can be really hard
to sustain focus on long term projects amongst the internal politics of
running a large company).
3) Access to the users. It would be reasonable that Adobe has build
some fabulous relationships with power users, and this drives new features
and gives them a chance of hitting the mark. Although Apple probably
has a lot of connections too, it's hard to imagine that their user relationships
in the particular area are as good.
4) Conflicts of interest. It's an uncomfortable role for Apple to play,
to on the one hand say "Our primary product is the platform, please
developers come and write serious applications for it to help us be successful",
and then setup to compete with the people you were hoping would help you.
5) For similar reasons, Apple limits it's appeal with such products
because they are locked to one platform. Adobe is more cross platform,
so can appeal to a wider market, and can appear as a more "honest broker"
- Adobe says "we're just trying to make the best possible image editing tool
for you", Apple is saying "We'll make an editing tool to get you to
buy into the Apple platform".
I'm sure there are other possible reasons.
