Taking the plunge into video, eh? Surprisingly enough there are not too many
instrument based solutions for video. Most video editors are using NTSC
production monitors, and those are usually "calibrated" visually by
displaying the PLUGE (Picture Line Up Generation Equipment) patterns you
mentioned. These monitors are pretty expensive, but if you are serious about
color then they are a necessity. The Panasonic BT-LH2600W is an excellent
choice at the moment, but its almost $5000.
The built-in color correction of the new Final Cut Studio 2 is essentially a
bundled version of Final Touch, from Silicon Color. Apple bought them and
now you get their excellent software as a component of the new Studio.
There is one video oriented color management solution we've been working
with that deserves mention. The product is called Cinespace and its
developed by a company in Australia called Rising Sun Research.

Essentially you use an iOne Pro to calibrate your monitor to a given
standard, simulate various film stocks, and can even provide other users
with your settings so you can be reasonably sure you're both looking at the
same color. Its a pretty sweet system, and the people at Rising Sun are very
friendly. They also have lots of great info on color management for film,
including this whitepaper:

Hope this helps!
