How about a little dose of reality...
ICC color management is being adopted by the printing industry VERY
SLOWLY! This means that the people that manufacture color management
software are not selling large numbers of instruments or software.
No one who believes in device independent color or the ICC color
management should do anything to slow this adoption any more than it
already has.
If the manufactures of instruments and software would like to sell their
products in volume, they need to fire their over protective lawyers and
make the exchange and selling of profiles easy. This is at the heart of
changing the industry. This backward, overprotective attitude is
equivalent to shooting oneself in the head.
Long ago when I worked for a certain company I had a long fight with the
lawyers and got them to change the software license of a certain (not
nearly as popular at X-Rite and GMB) software package so that people
could use it and sell the profiles. This company was bought by a large
company and I don't know what the license says today. The big company
has lots of lawyers.
Imagine if Adobe, HP, and Microsoft said that you had to pay them every
time you tagged a file with Adobe RGB 98 or sRGB!!!
When we exchange digital files in almost every other industry, the units
are traceable to international standards and you can reproduce what is
described by the digital file without seeing a model or proof. It is
only in our industry that this is lagging in this regard. When will be
catch up with the modern manufacturing methods adopted by every other
industry? CAD package software manufactures do not require you to send
them money every time you use their software to do a design and send a
file to a manufacture. (This analogy is closer than a lathe.)
Rant Off...
Cheers,
Ray Maxwell
