Rick,
Great advice, because the first round of profiles, using those measurements,
gave exactly that result....dark and muddy colors in the shadows.
Actually the printer is fine. But we're profiling the prepress company since
their doing all the press proofs and their press proofs are easily matched
by the printers. Much easier to profile them instead of 22 presses. So I'm
confident the printer will be fine with UCR.
Thanks. Any other suggestions?
Oh, one more thing...I have found that over the years using Relative
Colorimetric, as opposed to Perceptual Rendering intent resulted in less
colors shifting when pulling into the smaller CMYK color gamut. Especially
in fine art reproduction, it seemed the most accurate. However, it appears
that the profile software offers many more options for perceptual rendering
intents...should I be using that instead?
Thanks again,
Bob

370% sounds high for TIL, even for a sheetfed process. 360% is the highest
I've run across, and 320% is not uncommon.
I'd probably also go for a little less than 100% max K, probably 90%-95%.
All of this sounds like a recipe for blocked shadows.
GCR is safer for avoiding color casts based on small ink density variants on
press. The tradeoff is that the more black you add, the more you need to
watch for the dot gain effects caused by variance in black ink density.
UCR offers the most on-press control, but if your goal is to get things
right without press adjustment, and you have concerns about their process
control, it could be a risky choice.
