Hi Ken,
Graeme Gill already added (thanks!) some clarification to the terminology.
You can of course edit the file in photoshop and/or choose a new profile.
Most photographers however hate the idea that "others" fiddle with their
work.
So let us leave the original files alone and look for another solution...
A profile is a tag, is "metadata".
When you edit a profile or choose another profile, you change the output,
not the original file. It's all about non-destructive editing by the
printer.
Only temporary tag editing for reproduction purposes (color
adjustments/separation/screening etc.) should get the job done.
When there would be a provision for visualizing the changes you make to an
image (color balance, contrast, lighter, darker, black generation, TAC or
whatever could be made available) by editing the profile, you are ready to
go.
This way, it would be possible to put images with different black generation
on one page, mix different screening technologies etc.
You could "batch edit" images faster (without opening them in the editor)
etc.
I know, this looks like wishfull thinking but today's lack of a solution for
defining the responsibilities in the reproduction chain is asking for new
ideas.
Kind regards,
Paul Foerts
