Editing profiles is the "popular usage", then?

Using the non-colorimetric transformations or B2A tables is popular usage.

Myself, I do *nothing but* use the profile as my aim (in soft-proofing) and
perform color adjustments elsewhere (meaning in Photoshop). Does that mean
that I'm out of the mainstream? :-)

Yes. For most people, the device profile is the only hammer they have. Few to none of the popular workflows support device links or abstract transforms for instance (where do you set a device link or abstract profile in an Epson driver ?)
