Graeme,

Editing profiles is the "popular usage", then?

I'm not clear what you mean, but it would be unsettling if true.

Myself, I do *nothing but* use the profile as my aim (in soft-proofing) and
perform color adjustments elsewhere (meaning in Photoshop). Does that mean
that I'm out of the mainstream? :-)
