Your understanding of economics needs to be complemented by an understanding of business strategy. If a corporation were in it for the long-term they would seek to be at the <bleeding edge> of the technology or they will eventually disappear. For the real smart ones, long before they lose sales to competitors they will be acquiring that bleeding edge either by in-house R&D or by acquisition (why they bought Gretag). They may or may not maximize profits in the short term, but they will be there to do so in the long term. Whether or not everyone likes what happens to the product mix in an interval would be a secondary issue for them.

upgrade their software would be to maximize profits. If they can
continue to sell a product and not have to invest in improving it,
they will. If they start to substantially lose sales to a competitor
or competitors, they will either buy them up, or make a better product.
