I have to admit that –unlike the rest of the workflow – this part is quite a new ballgame for me. I’m checking out 2 types of paper: one is a matte coated and the other a special paper. The special is a mix between an uncoated and coated because its surface fiber is more compact, so the gamut is larger than an uncoated paper and the visual effect is of a “natural paper”. With 3 different types of ink on each, (normal and high-density) we are trying to enlarge the gamut, especially for the special one. Here some of you will notice that we are moving a bit away from “Fogra characterization” because Fogra does not concern that type of paper (but as far as I know, stochastic screening is also not pertinent).
But it is important for me to have color repeatability during the whole printing process, and the software calibration plate (which may bring a certain characterization)ensures this repeatability. Even though the software linearizes the paper/ink combination, there are combinations that render an uneven TVI curve (eg. with peaks) as well as ones with strong differences between them. The problem is that I have to evaluate these curves to choose the best paper/ink combination (as well as gamut space and good quality visual response), and so when evaluating a TVI curve I must be sure to choose the right tool/method to do it.
