Uli,
I've used Colorbase to 'synchronise' my two Epson R2400 printers, use the
same Epson-made profiles with both, and avoid having to make a series of
custom profiles for both printers for all papers.
It also has the advantage of saving ink! It apparently works by calibrating
the amounts of the different inks that are deposited more accurately than
can be done during manufacture of the heads. That calibration allows the
driver to caculate ink usage more accurately, and Epson state that this will
reduce the safety margin of ink that has to be left in the cartridges when
they are deemed empty.
So I only have to print and measure two targets instead of many, my two
printers give similar results, I save ink, and I get to use Epson profiles
made with gear I can't justify buying. Win, win, win, win.
From what Epson says, this color calibration is done at the factory to the
large-format printers after assembly, but not to the intermediates like the
R2400.
Of course it has to be repeated at intervals to take account of wear and
tear on the printer, but that's the same with all those custom profiles.
Bob Frost.

The ColorBase concept has confused me to some extent. It tries to take
the calibration step from "well-defined for a single device" to "well-
defined across all devices of one type", thereby enabling the use of
generic ICC profiles you won't have to measure and create individually
anymore. But what's gained with that step if now you'll need the
spectro for the ColorBase measurements? The only difference
(advantage, depending on your POV) is that the "recipes" for handling
perceptual rendering etc. are now in the hand of Epson and not in the
hand of some manufacturer of profiling software.
