My own tests also confirm this. This is why I use an adaptive integration
time when measuring the Spyder3 in PatchTool. I do the same with the Spyder2
but with different parameters, as they are different beasts. Also, the user
can select two measuring modes, one optimized for precision, and the other
for speed (and even optimized for speed, the results are better than those
obtained with the default integration time). The drawback is longer
measuring times when there are a lot of dark patches, but more stable
measurements.

Maybe that's another problem as well. The problem I've seen
is that the the dark readings are pretty inconsistent. For instance,
if I try and measure my CRT's black several times I
get the following XYZ numbers:
0.050 0.009 0.299
-0.037 0.060 0.048
0.009 0.005 0.113
-0.035 0.057 0.044
By contrast, the Spyder 2 gets:
0.098 0.077 0.061
0.097 0.077 0.061
0.097 0.076 0.063
0.102 0.077 0.067
Not too bad.

Given the typically poor blacks on LCD's, maybe this isn't
an issue for the Spyder 3 for most users, although the introduction
of LCD displays using dynamic LED backlighting ("BrightSide"
HDR technology), may disturb that comfort.
