Martin's first claim was specifically that:
Getting PS to convert to the target profile during printing produced
worse results than getting something else to convert to the target
profile and then print with no conversion.
My first thought was to wonder if there was a difference between this
and getting PS to do the conversion and then print with no conversion
as a separate step. There are enough weird under-the-covers factors at
play with CS4 and recent OSX versions that although we think it
shouldn't have an effect, it might.

Martin's first claims of a problem seemed to make some assumptions,
starting with: it was not clear whether the profile-conversion part of
the process was the issue or whether it was part of the printing
process.
The back-and-forth arguing since then seems to have bypassed
considerations like this.
Just wondering...
