Martin’s descriptions of his findings are very clear. How he made the
findings are muddled.
It's not hard to show artefact's using conventional color
management processes. For instance, take this (rather stressing)
test image <http://www.argyllcms.com/RGBsurfall.tif>, convert it
from AdobeRGB1998 to Adobe's CS4 (download) CoatedFOGRA39.icc via
the Adobe CMM to perceptual intent, no BPC and you get this
<http://www.argyllcms.com/RGBsurfall_AdobeRGB2PercCS4Fogra39.tif>.
Not bad, but notice the contours between blue and cyan (Sorry,
I haven't embedded profiles in these images).
Running it through the Argyll V1.1.0 RC1 device link then CMM workflow
I get this sort of thing
<http://www.argyllcms.com/RGBsurfall_AdobeRGB2PercCS4Fogra39_ArgyllDL.tif>
which is a little smoother in that area, and (I think) is a bit more
even in the color distribution. The transition to black is a bit
different, but this could be because Argyll is making allowance for viewing
conditions, or simply sets a different trade off in the perceptual mapping.
Adobe's profiles are generally pretty good. I suspect the artefacts could
be worse with profiles from many other sources.
cheers,
Graeme Gill.
