Terry,
I may be wrong but I remain convinced that there is more C5 than C3 going on
globally in web offset printing today, especially in the world of
publication. Covers are invariably ran C3 but interiors, most of the time,
in my experience, except in smaller run-lengths, and that maybe where you
see the kind of commercial printing you describe (?) going, are ran on some
flavour of coated 5 paper.
Is C3 a better all-around, "blind-exchange" choice for printing in general
than C5 or SWOPv2?
I would say that, as long as the profile used to make separations is
documented then all options remain opened till the end. And that's what
matters to me. I think I would even favour advanced workflows like PDF/X3+.
There is nothing wrong with clients sending PDFs with loads of sRGB images
in as it's not too difficult to convert to C3 or C5 when the job comes in
the door. Those who insist on sending their own CMYK conversions have all
the liberty to do so. I have to admit plurality. The important thing is to
keep channels of communication opened between the client and the printer.
If no communication is possible then, I agree with you that C3 is probably
going to do less damage to the file than blind adherence to Photoshop's
SWOPv2. No offense Adobe. Do we know whether the defaults have changed in
CS5?
Regards / Roger
