Hello all,
There are several possiblities to apply static devicelink profiles in
the PDF workflow with either entry solutions or workflow, wich is
already available at a printers:
- Pitstop (Server)
- Callas PDF Toolbox (Server)
- Apago PDF Optimizer
- Several prepress workflows (Apogee, Prinergy, Prinect)
But often, the details are the critical points:
- Does the colorserver supports to adjust DeviceGray like CMYK with
Black Channel only ?
- Whats about CMYK-Objects wich are encoded as spot color named Cyan,
Magenta, Yellow and Black ?
How to handle ICCbasedCMYK objects in the PDF-file ?
For such objects, the best solution is to create DeviceLink profiles on
the Fly. The leading solution in this field is Alwan CMYKOptimizer,
deliviring such functionality since years including analyzing the size
of areas in PDF file which have to high TAC and dynamicly calculating
TAC limiting in the devicelink creation.
How to handle ICCbasedGray objects in the PDF-file ?
Is the source-profile respected and the file is mapped to black only of
the target CMYK-profile
Also colorlogic has released the Colorserver ZePrA 2.0 with dynamic
DeviceLinks for the german market. I expect that system integrators with
colorlogic technology offer such functionality for areas outside germany
soon.
Another field is finetuning of proofing standards and devicelink
profiles for conversion to deliver both colorimetric and visually
perfect results.
Here is the strength of GMG, especially for catalog and magazine gravure
and heatset printing.
Best regards
Jan-Peter

Are any of these 'color servers' (GMG, Oris, Alwan, etc.) doing to
files anything more than applying static link profiles?
I mean, I understand there's the functionality of building and
tweaking those profiles, and there's where they differ from each other
in functionality and quality achieved. But after the parameters have
been defined and the links built (proprietary or otherwise), the
day-to-day usage is just applying those profiles to the PDF files fed,
right? there's no per-image of per-file color optimization of any
other kind, is there?
So if you have a super-pro version of any of these apps, which allow
you to export (to standard ICC link profiles) the link profiles it has
built... then you could use Apago's PDF Optimizer program ($350 !) to
apply them to your files in a hot-folder workflow...
(or if Eric had finished and released Ultralinks...)
