Color Server products typically aren't just static device links plugged into workflow product....they may also offer image analysis and a certain amount of "intelligence" as to how the image/page is processed.
Alwan CMYK Optimizer for one claims to build "dynamic" device links on-the-fly based on image content. Specifically with regards to total area coverage (TAC), it can analyze the image and decide based on the amount of area that might exceed the allowed TAC as to how to build the link to best maintain contrast AND reduce total ink consumption. They also offer a static device link product called LinkProfiler but it does not have this same "dynamic" device link technology obviously.
