For art work:
We have a magnetic viewing wall at UVM (art department) that I set up with Sylvania Par38 fresnels + 5 SoLux MR16 4700k 35 degree "supplemental" lights. This brings the spectrum to between 2900k and 3200k and the LUX 489/520 respectively (with sliders). This is where I want to be when I'm viewing fine-art prints going into a gallery. 5000K is way too cold in my opinion because most galleries are under 3200K!
That said, we have our monitors set at 5000k. This does not equate to reflective light temp and is a different thing.
This balance of 5000k gamma 2.2 (or even 2.4 depending on OS and screen hardware + RIP) on Apple iMacs + 2900-3200k 500lux viewing wall seems to work very well indeed. Room light is bounced high off the walls from 2400k halogens. This makes a very small amount of back-light behind the monitors and fills the room nicely. We don't have desk lamps. We believe that you shouldn't see your print and screen at the same time. You need to turn your head or move your body. That movement calibrates your brain in my opinion.
All the best,
Walker
