I'll chime in to this discussion because we encounter this "broken" profile problem all the time in InDesign. We always embed profiles into our images (in Photoshop) and when we bring them in to InDesign I'd say about half the time InDesign lists them as "document CMYK" in the links palette. The profiles are definitely embedded in the images, and not just as EXIF data.
I've never been able to figure out why InDesign does this. All operators in my shop have the color settings set to "Emulate Adobe InDesign 2.0 CMS Off", so I suppose that could be related, but I cannot find a pattern as to why it "sees" the profile in some images and not others. We (obviously) don't depend on ID to show a color managed preview, but it would be handy if we could see what profile was used by looking at the links palette, but we can't. I see this behavior in CS3, CS4 & CS5.
Just sayin!
