DNG is raw data (unless you select by mistake lossly DNG). And yes, you do want to archive that data as you can always re-develop (render) that as a raw converter gets better. Perfect example is Adobe's PV 2012 vs. 2010 and 2003.
You wouldn't shoot film (color neg), make a print and then decide to toss the neg would you?

Such as? You know the Luminosity blend mode while not 100% identical will give you the same results while remaining in RGB in terms of separating luminosity from 'color'.
