Mainly, direct access to the a and b channels. Separating saturation from luminosity is a key element in my process, and with Lab, the farther you get left or right of center is directly representative of saturation. In RGB, even in color mode (unless you're using a tool like Lobster or [I think] CurveMeister), a saturated dark red will be in a very different place on the histogram than a saturated light red.

Actually that's what I usually do, along with maybe a raw smart object with some other adjustments in Photoshop, held on separate layers.
