OK, you're mistaken <g>.
Again, aside from Dutone support, anything you can do with a PSD (layers as well) can be saved as a TIFF.
Please note, layers are proprietary! They are only understood inside of Photoshop and even older versions of layered doc's can be udpated (text layers often).

Think again. In this series of posts, we hear lots of people saying they are done with Adobe. Fine. So ask yourself, how many other image editors support TIFF vs. PSD. Lots support TIFF, very few support PSD because they have to pay licensing to do so.
The TIFF that supports layers should have a flattened version inside as well (TIFF compatibility) because IF you send that layered TIFF to say Prevew, it can't understand layers but it can understand that flatted version and show you the data. Preview CAN open a PSD because Apple has paid for that functionality. But other compaines? Probably not.
You want non destructive access to your layered images in 5 years, better hope your current version of Photoshop keeps running, especially if you want access to those layers!
