Correct! If you hit that limit, TIFF poop's out so you must use PSB. That begs a new question of Adobe. Could they update TIFF or DNG (which is based on TIFF) to support a larger image?

It might. But the short history of image file formats doesn't support that. Since PSD buys you nothing over TIFF, why not just use a format that's without question supported in more products that read image data?
