This is of course correct, but there are a number of necessary conditions (media flatness, rigid camera support, evenness of lighting, lens qualities, alignment etc.) for performing successful document copying using a camera - but no question that done right with high quality equipment the sharpness and resolution will match or exceed what high-end prosumer scanners deliver, and then one has a real raw file to work with if captured raw.
Turning back to the scanning approach however, I did suggest to Peter that he try several settings in SilverFast to see whether those would bring the highlights under control. They won't recover detail that is clipped in all three channels, but they will bring the highlight luminance back from off the right-end wall of the histogram.

You know, there's another option. A Canon 5DIII can capture an image the same size at 300 PPI....
