No doubt you also know that the advertised resolution of most scanners we commonly use is often well above their optical resolving power when tested with a bespoke resolution testing target.
I mentioned earlier that I’ve got a couple of Lanovia C-550s, a couple of ICG drums and an old Scanview 11000 in my reprographic museum ;-)
Also got more modern kit like Nikon's D800E and a bunch of Phase backs including the IQ180 — so have made plenty of comparison tests with everything from transparencies (still got a Bowens Illumitran in the museum too) to large artworks.
There’s no generalisations here — I’m in the market for scanners that will give me resolutions equal to or greater than the Lanovias at SRA3 or larger and allow me to ditch OS9 and SCSI :-)
What do I buy?
The only thing that I’ve seen is Cruse kit — but it’s still a camera on a rostrum and unable to do some of the stuff that our scanners can do with things like high resolution line art and copydot etc
The market is dead and it’s a real shame for clients who require very high quality scanning work.
