A "default" CMYK color space should be based on a "BROAD" base of CMYK printing.
To me, the broadest base of printing, worldwide, bar none, is sheetfed -- not web! So why use a default that does not represent the broadest base of printing? That's my number one reason.
The second reason is because TR-001 which became US WebCoatedSWOP and then, later, US WebCoatedSWOPv2, was the only "documented" CMYK printing condition in North America, in the mid '90s. GATF was struggling with its own sheetfed press standard, at that time. They came close with SHOPS but not close enough.
I'm not criticizing or bashing Adobe. Please don't get me wrong. All I'm saying is that there is no reasons things cannot be improved, other than for reason of plain, ugly politics.
Go to any self-respecting print shop today and see how everyone is pushing the envelope in an effort to better compete for jobs in the market. Of course, all printing on Grade 1 and 2 paper is done with GRACoL gamuts. And there is a trend to match GRACoL proofs even on Uncoated paper, using higher densities of inks, at ever higher line screens -- I think these guys are crazy but that's another discussion. In web printing, there is an ever larger segment of the market that is printing to GRACoL! Yes, web! Open your eyes. In flexography, our friend Bill could comment that he only calibrates his flexo presses with P2P target to GRACoL. There is nothing all that "complicated" to print to sheetfed densities? And in large format output, all you guys keep bashing me on the head with is that, if anything, everyone is printing not to SWOPv2 but to the full RGB gamut of their devices! So, I say, it's a matter of recognizing that "modern practices" have changed and that the world of print is far from stuck in SWOPv2.
I don't care if the default is Adobe's own GRACoL in North America or IDEAlliance's flavors of GRACoL and Fogra39 in Europe but not recognizing the reality of the print market today is, in my view, irresponsible. Please, Mr. Adobe, take a good look at the print industry today and make a stand, the print world has come a long way from what it was in 1993 and become a lot better place for doing color business than it has ever been. And it's time for SWOPv2 to yield its place as "king of printing".
Best / Roger
