A default CMYK color space should be
„Default CMYK setting, don’t use“
subtitle: "replace by a standard of YOUR printing service“
This will start the correct discussion between all parties.
If you want to stay neutral, there is no way around RGB/LAB.
Everything else is process specific and has to be treated that way
Implication:
- you need to know which process you are going to use
- you need to know it before separation and optimizing
From a customer point of view:
If the answer of your printing service is Gracol, ISOcoated, ISOnewspaper or what ever you know what to do, because your printing service has optimized their processes to this standard and you will most likely get the results you expected.
From a printing service point of view:
- Select an appropriate color space with the best match to YOUR equipment and paper stock as your default.
- Check all other major color spaces you might need to print: where does clipping, banding or unexpected behavior might happen within YOUR process. When you receive data outside of your default color space do a quick softproof if some of the restrictions apply to that document and talk to your customer.
- Communicate this openly.
Just my 2 cents.
