Never mind the XServe, the QuickSilver G4's are staggeringly loud. And
there is no better machine for doing audio, except OOPS - over the fans you
can't hear that 24-bit dynamic range you spent so much money for. For those
of us doing this kind of audio work (which I think is a significant target
for Apple), Apple's own hardware currently doesn't serve us well.
It is a real problem. I would buy a quiet water-cooled retrofit or any
quieter fans in a second. (Generally the fans are louder than they need to
be, or so I am told. If Apple knows they are in the audio market, then why
shouldn't they install the quietest possible fans?) And having to research
and install alternative fans that are not supported is not something many of
us want to get into.
Even if Apple were to facilitate 3rd party development for this problem it
would be great.
Of course powerbooks are ideal for quiet, but many of us are pushing the
edge of audio computing power and they just wont do.
The equipment closet is a great concept - but for many of us it is not a
reality. I actually have my Quicksilver in a very large wooden box, in
effect (actually an unusual kind of built-in storage space). This takes out
the "hiss" aspect of the fans pretty well, but the hum of the fans is still
bad. Curiously when the hard disk spins down you can barely tell the
difference because the fans drown it out anyway.
Sorry for the OT, but I can't think of a better forum to bring this up.
Surely this must be an issue for many people on this list, and their
potential customers.
Thanks,
Kurt Bigler
