DLS/Soundfont Quality Setting?

I am wondering what is up with DLS/Soundfont Quality Setting? It seems like it some cases it makes a great difference in processing time (avoiding sound break up by setting it to miniumum) but as far as sound quality goes, my untrained ear cannot tell the difference between any of the settings. What does this 'quality' setting actually do?

I have only been using large sound fonts so if it is exclusively a DLS setting that would sort of make sense.
