We're talking about the same thing: Xcode vs. Developer Tools. It
installs your developement environment, debugging/performance tools,
and sample code. Try doing a custom install of those tools (at some
point in the install process, you'll see a "Custom" button on the
bottom of the installer window.) Using that, you may be able to just
install the sample code, shrinking that 580MB footprint substantially.
