I've Googled lists.apple.com, but only found one such reference, from an email entitled "Multichannel and AU". I don't see anything of interest there, really.

Anything specific I should look for besides the quoted error message above?

One note: this plug-in I'm working on is a Music Effect (it supports MIDI), if that's of any consequence.

Never mind! I've found the problem. I wasn't setting the IOElements' formats for single-channel.
