William,
"John"
FYI: I have no idea where this "john" comes from. I signed up to this list
as Michael Olsen. Maybe it has to do with my ADC membership (which I signed
up with using a false name as far as I recall).
When you are dealing with multiple specifications I think it is not
unreasonable to expect differences.
Of course not. So, when I see the differences I try to solve them in a
manner which is consistent with the specs at hand.
In this case it is AU. Since I have no experience with AU I decided to ask
this list what would be the best choice for the user.
In between I offered the provocative thought that maybe version number 0
would work. If no-one asks such questions, then maybe noone thinks about it.
Well, I now know this won't work, because only Logic rescans when the
version number is 0.
Some differences should be expected, and as I've said previously, I think
its beholden on you (and ever other plug-in developer) to both understand
those differences and handle them in a compatible way. Its at least a
reasonable point of view to suggest that these differences are on the
whole pretty minor, so some work to provide good solutions in both areas
is not unreasonable.
Of course.
Publishing a version number of zero is not a solution.
No, I know that now. If I hadn't asked, I wouldn't have known. So, I'm
working to find the best solution.
blishing the channel capabilities of an AU and not changing them is how
the AU specification works. Changing the channel capabilities is
considered by us as a change that would be signalled through a new release
of the AU - thus a need to change the version of the AU.
Good, this is excact information.
If you are not aware of the other applications that host AudioUnits on Mac
OS X, then you are probably missing opportunities to appeal to user
communities that might like to utilise your AU (or in marketing- speak, you
are missing sales!).
No, marketing is not my department, I'm just the developer. Someone else is
handling those matters (fortunately for me).
There is no doubt that Logic is an important product, but Garage Band is
shipped on *every* new mac that is sold, and is also available for
separate purchase - it is a very widely used product. Sound Track Pro is a
new product that has a growing number of users, particular in the
post-production video market (amongst others). MoTU's Digital Performer is
also a very good and popular sequencer, just to name a few.
Yes, I know Digital Performer. Currently we have some compability problems
with it, which is one reason why we're looking to make an AU ourself (our
current beta is using purchased code).
All in all I honestly don't understand what is going on. People seem intend
on writing mails about how I don't want to implement it the proper way, even
though as far as I can tell, the decision I made (to remove it from the
interface) was the excact decision that you all promoted.
Could someone please let me know where I fail?
Thanks,
Michael Olsen

Please lets not be rude here. You asked why I had the problem, and I
answered. Of course I know how to remove it from the interface if
neccasary, that's not the question at all.
If you're going to be rude to me, I'd rather not answer your questions.
Okay. I haven't been asking questions, I've been trying to answer yours.
Though it doesn't seem that you actually want to hear possible solutions.
I'm not sure why, and really I'm not trying to be rude, but at a point,
it's hard to figure out how to help someone when they ask for help, but
claim that any proposed ideas that would involve actually doing something
to solve the problem would be unmanageable. I'm not sure, do you just
want to hear yourself justify why you're not going to work on a better
solution? I'm not invested in whatever project you're working on, but
I'll try to give helpful ideas if folks ask questions, but if you don't
really want help or ideas, I'm not sure what else to say...
