Oh, and FW-B spec also contains specifications for 1500MBit buses. It also has some features to extend the distance limitations that were present in the initial FW spec (and of course are still in USB).

The main problem we had with USB 1.x devices was the poor timing models for real-time work - the ultimate affect of which was a very high latency for I/O (and jitter). Just having a faster bus does not necessarily fix those problems. I'd be interested to know what kinds of latencies are possible with USB 2.x hardware if anyone has measured this. One of the real benefits of FW - with the core timing services in the basic transport layers - I/O times rivalling PCI buses were possible, as we have seen from several manufacturer's audio interfaces: MOTU, RME, Digidesign are some that come to mind.

I suppose it would be redundant to point out here that the audio bandwidth is
not exactly 400 Mbit or 480 Mbit due to overhead of each bus protocol. The
actual audio bit rates would be lower, and are probably close to being on par
with each other between FireWire 400 and USB 2.0

Of course, we have already seen FireWire 800 audio interfaces, so the bus bit
wars are far from over...

When comparing USB 1.1 and FireWire, FireWire is the clear winner.
There really isn't any comparison presuming price isn't a factor (USB
is definitely cheaper). The biggest factors that make FireWire better
are the higher throughput

That's right, but on USB2.0 it's 400Mbit against 480 Mbit. _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list. They will be ignored. Coreaudio-api mailing list (email@hidden) Help/Unsubscribe/Update your Subscription:
