What user-land drivers are installed? They are in /Library/Audio/
PlugIns/HAL.

wait to see if anyone responds, do those applications provide any

Update:
A user tested this last night by doing a clean install on a Mac
Mini. With the fresh install, the freeze did not appear.
Then he installed Soundtrack only from the Final Cut Studio 5.1
install, and the freeze appeared.
