I'm trying to figure out the difference between
kAudioHardwarePropertyDefaultOutputDevice
and
kAudioHardwarePropertyDefaultSystemOutputDevice
From the reference documentation:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MusicAudio/Reference/CACoreAudioReference/AudioHardware/CompositePage.htmlI'm assuming this text is meant to apply to the default system output device: "The AudioDeviceID of the output AudioDevice to use for system related sound from the alert sound to digital call progress."
But what does that really mean? And does that mean that applications should generally be using the default output device rather than the default system output device?
I'm wondering particularly because most examples seem to use the default output device, but the source for Adium uses the system output device
http://trac.adiumx.com/browser/trunk/Source/AdiumSound.mAnd I'm curious if it could be causing problems in some systems with sound configurations that include both internal speakers and external usb-based sound devices.
