NSOpenPanel - turning off QuickLook for audio

I have some oddball audio file formats/extensions that I use and I find that NSOpenPanel takes forever to get around to letting me select a file because it is busy looking for a QuickLook plug-in to show me a preview - which I don't want anyway.
Before I write my own dummy QuickLook plug-ins for these types, does anyone have a better idea? Long ago there was a user preference that could turn off previews, but I believe it's gone....
