This seems to raise a couple of pertinent questions:

1) Are there any AU hosts which prefer a Carbon UI when presented with both
Cocoa and Carbon? That would certainly cause a problem.

Yes. The Metro sequencer used to do this for quite a while and AudioHijack Pro still does it. There might be others but I need to check the list that I have, I don't recall which ones off the top of my head.

Is there any public resource where this sort of thing might be documented (other than the archives of this mailing list)? I realize that it's a lot to expect volunteers to support this kind of information, but it really doesn't belong to any one commercial entity since it represents all company's DAWs.

I knew of BigBlueLounge.com, but it seems to be AWOL at the moment, and never was quite technical enough for programmers.

I'd be really happy if Apple would finally make Carbon go away, this
whole business of having to deal with different UI technologies is
nasty to begin with and it requires ugly hacks to make it work in all
hosts.

You can thank Apple's customers for Carbon's continued existence. I suffered for over a decade since Apple introduced ObjC and Cocoa for Mac OS in 1997, listening to customers whine about Apple's plans to get rid of Carbon. Apple has had to fight tooth and nail with developers who weren't willing to give Cocoa a full chance, and the original plans to make Carbon go away have thus been delayed and delayed again. I suppose we might finally be free some day, but we've had to lose support for alternate platforms along the way (i.e. we seem to be Intel-only now, despite all the cutting edge game platforms being PowerPC and Cell based).

Sorry for the aside...
