As a minor counterpoint to this claim, which I don't fundamentally
disagree with: the GTK OSX project, which is a port of the GTK GUI
toolkit to run "natively" on OS X (Aqua, specifically) rather than
rely on Apple's X11 implementation, has had a *really* hard time
dropping Carbon. The story is the same as usual for Apple development:
if you want to do something that is totally locked into Apple APIs and
technologies, things are really good. If you have cross platform
goals, then you frequently need to dig deeper into the various layers
of APIs that make up OS X, and that's the point at which the
documentation starts to get thin and the development experience wanes
a bit.. GTK OSX is primarily implemented using Cocoa, but there are
some small but key aspects of it that at least a half dozen
programmers have never been able to find Cocoa equivalents for (and if
they have, often only by accident). Maybe we've all just been lazy or
stupid, I don't know. Additionally, it always puzzled me that Apple
was so willing to completely drop its older audio APIs with the switch
to OS X, but allowed Carbon GUIs for plugins to continue after the
arrival of Cocoa.
