Not an odd creation at all. This would be a typical and popular
application for such a config (multi-in, 2 out):
http://www.prosoniq.com/audio-plugins/prosoniq-morph/
This plug in morphs sounds to create hybrids and it works great in
Logic, apparently they use 2 channels + 2 channels from the side chain
for the 2xstereo-in > stereo-out case.
A stereo vocoder would be another use case.
