Yes, that's what I do in my AUs by creating my own MIDI source(-s)
instead of relaying on IAC: I've no problem of latency to report.

Isn't the issue that sending MIDI to physical devices allows precise
scheduling, including scheduling MIDI events in advance so that the
hardware can deliver them on time, whereas sending MIDI to virtual
outputs cannot use the same scheduling? My recollection is a little
vague here, and I haven't tried the exact situation described, but I
do seem to remember that hardware MIDI has certain advantages over
virtual MIDI, even if the virtual MIDI ends up being sent to a
hardware device eventually.
In any case, I'm sure James can clarify what he means by latency. I
would certainly be interested to know more about the tradeoffs.
