I would think that if it were not designed to work that way, Apple
wouldn't (a) tell you how to do it[1] and (b) demonstrate it in their
retail outlets.[2]

Display Closed.
You can use your PowerBook with the display closed if the computer is
connected to
an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and the power adapter is
plugged into the
PowerBook and an outlet. [...]"
[2] 12" PB on display at a local Apple Store with lid closed (held
with zip-ties no less) and external mouse/keyboard-display. _______________________________________________
