Another possible way around the "problem" is to format it as FAT, then create a segmented disk image on the device, mount that and format it as HFS+
I would be happy to provide help in this process if this is desired.
This wont be bootable either. To boot a MacBookPro you have to have pdisk or gpt (GUID) partitioning with HFS+ volumes on it.
