The lack of a formal ability to unlock the iPhone is the primary

Hear hear. I currently use a Palm Centro I bought unlocked direct
from Palm because my carrier didn't offer it (and I wanted a
smartphone with an OS that didn't stink on ice like WinMobile).
It's been a joy to have *all* the features available vs. my old
phone, which while "unlocked" (i.e., I could use any SIM from any
carrier) was still crippled (features disabled in the software image).
...and if ALL phones were "unlocked" with all of the features (like
laptop tethering) always enabled, then I imagine the carriers would
just continue to provide unlimited data service at the same rates as
they do now...?
I'm not saying I disagree with you. I'm just saying there is a flip
side to the story that what is easy and convenient for folks who are
technically savvy and don't mind working around other limitations
(Like, why doesn't my visual voicemail work on carrier X? Or, why did
I suddenly receive a $4500 data bill on my international SIM because I
didn't understand I need unlimited data?) might not be the case for
consumers at large.
