Rats. I spoke too soon. Last night I applied the AT&T update to activate the MMS function, and now it's no email time, just the spinning wheel. Mail before the update, no email after the update. I don't know of any way to 'de-update' the phone. I wish there was a way for Time Machine to preserve the contents and settings of the phone - now that'd be a feature.

I'm doing a slightly different experiment. I set the phone (3G) to call forwarding to another mobile phone, but 3G connectivity is otherwise intact. Mail, web, and GPS all function normally, and I've stopped looking at the unending "connecting" message when getting mail, because it appears to connect and get mail just fine in spite of that. I'm now on my second day without recharging, the phone hasn't been powered down, and I've still about 2/3 battery life left. Based on this observation, it's the phone function that's really pulling down the juice.
