I know you're joking, but for clarity and for others who might not have gleaned this, the signal meters will now more accurately reflect the signal in the area, meaning people won't suddenly see what appears to be a massive drop in signal by simply putting their hand in a particular spot.
There are multiple issues here:
- The signal bars
- The apparent dramatic drop in signal bars when placing one's hand in a particular spot
† The actual drop in signal strength when this occurs
- Dropped calls of unknown origin (e.g., AT&T's network, other reasons, that are no better or worse with iPhone 4 than any previous iPhone)
* Dropped calls specifically due to an iPhone 4 issue
The last of these (*) is the only actual iPhone 4 issue I'd consider a real problem, and would appear to affect a very small proportion of iPhone 4 users. Many of these users have had the problem solved by use of a bumper. † is also a problem, but not if the only manifestation is still the signal bars, and the call and/or data services remain functioning without any perceptible issues.
I've found iPhone 4 (with bumper) to be far superior in performance to iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS. I'm sure someone else will say that this is wrong in their experience, but it seems to support Anandtech's detailed conclusions, and those from Engadget and other reviewers.
Nevertheless, the letter is now up on Apple's web site:
