Seem to recall that if a smart card reader conforms to standards, no special drivers are needed. This new reader looks slick but the older SCR requires no hardware specific software to support it vs any other card reader. The "Mac drivers available" for the new one gives me pause.
While smart card readers should comply with the CCID standard, Apple's smart card software does not. Card reader software is supposed to look at the descriptor stored in the card reader to determine its capabilities. While Apple software does do this, it does not properly handle card readers that support short APDU mode.Card readers that indicate short APDU mode may work with CAC but won't work with a PIV card or any card that uses the T=1 protocol. Because of some of these limitations, Apple's software restricts card reader support to only the devices listed in this plist: /usr/libexec/SmartCardServices/drivers/ifd-ccid.bundle/Contents/Info.plist Apple's smart card drivers are in need of updating so they fully support CCID.
