The first thing is to look at the I/O registry a short while after
you've plugged the drive in. Do this on a working machine and you
should see the drive show up in the registry, along with a bunch of
stuff stacked on top it. The question is, on a failing machine, how
much of that stack gets built (clearly not all of it otherwise
DiskArb would get involved).
You can look at the I/O registry using IORegistryExplorer (in
/Developer/Applications/Utilities) or <x-man-page://8/ioreg>).
