Hi Martin,

I saw the same. I haven't had time to dive into - but an idea I had was to apply my own type/creator (maybe extension) and than tell the system to open this kind of doc with FCP. Maybe it's worth a trial. I don't know.

Hi Helena and Paul

Having looked more into this, I think the easiest thing is going to be using a shell script to force open the XML file in FCP rather than the assigned default app.

thanks for your help.

Hi Martin,

So you want to tag these files as "open with Final Cut" as you create them?

I believe you want to manipulate the LaunchServices database. Here is some documentation describing how the Finder chooses which application to launch when a particular document is double- clicked, and the API for accessing / modifying this database.

Hi Paul

Yes, I'm fine with the UI way of reassigning default app but as I'm sure you'll understand expecting our customers to do this tweak for themselves creates usability issues I'd rather avoid, hence the shell script quest.

Hi Martin,

. Is there a shell command that can be used to set FCP as the default app for a particular XML file?

You can "Get Info" on the file, twiddle down the "Open With" arrow, and select Final Cut for a specific file, or for all XML files. There is probably a corresponding shell command, but I'd have to look it up. Did you need a shell command, or did you just think there wasn't UI for this?

You can also right-click on the file and choose "Open With" rather than double-clicking. And of course you can import or open the file from within Final Cut itself.

Hi Helena

I'm on FCP7. So to clarify, because FCP is now classed as an XML reader, it won't open it's own XML files by default when running Snow Leopard?

I'm just a bit confused about how to get around this. Is there a shell command that can be used to set FCP as the default app for a particular XML file? I had a quick search but couldn't find anything.

thanks

Hi Martin!

Any application indicating they're an XML 'editor' will get launched on XML open. We had many complaints about FCP doing this so we've (correctly, we think) re-categorized the app as a XML 'reader' with the latest release Final Cut Studio (whereas we used to categorize ourselves as an XML 'editor'). Any chance you also recently upgraded your Final Cut Pro?

Sorry for any confusion this change may have caused you.

Helena

Anyone else seeing FCP XML files opening in applications OTHER than FCP when double clicked?

Had a customer reporting the "Loader Send.xml" file we create and launch to send copied files to FCP was opening in Illustrator. On my system it was opening in Dashcode, even though the Type and Creator codes are correctly set for FCP.

thanks
