In case anyone is interested, WebObjects 5.2.3 appears to work fine in my little bit of testing against PostgreSQL 8.0 beta1. This is on Mac OS X 10.3.5. I haven't done any heavy load testing and this is a beta so it may fail in some instances although the PostgreSQL betas in my experience are usually very stable. I did put execute a large bit of SQL from EOModeler though and all my pages seem to be working as expected.

The JDBC is no longer included in the build process so you need to go to http://jdbc.postgresql.org/ to get the 8.0 beta (build version 305 as of yesterday) to get a driver that is built against this release. It's possible that the 7.4 drivers will work too but I haven't tried them.

PostgreSQL is really starting to close the gap between big commercial db's with a lot of enterprise level features (replication, transaction savepoints, point in time recovery, etc) and is still at the right price.

I personally haven't but someone I know from where I work has built it
and has it running, and he says it is very nice indeed. He is a smart
man, so I respect his judgement. He has not, to my knowledge, tried
WebObjects on it.

I had the version (7.4) from Cygwin working on windows with WO, but it
was a bit fiddly to get working...once I had Postgres working, WO worked
just fine against it. So I am hoping that JDBC insulates any nasties
from WO, and it will work just fine.

Good luck with your ventures, and let us know your experiences with it.
The feature list does indeed look nice.

Hey Geoff -

Have you built the Version 8 beta yet and have it working with
WebObjects? I just downloaded it and was going to try it this weekend
but thought I'd check if everything is cool with the JDBC driver and
Wonder plug-in before I spend hours working on it.
The version 8 features look pretty nice!

Thanks

Sad man's Saturday night, sitting here, working on WebObjects, using
Postgres. It's free, supports transactions etc. Version 8 beta is out
that installs on Windows, otherwise version 7.4.x available for Linux,
MacOSX...do yourself a favour and have a look at it. It's very good -
and I say that having worked extensively on Oracle, Sybase, OpenBase,
FrontBase, MySql and SQLServer...but no 4th Dimension.

If you are on Mac:

http://developer.apple.com/internet/opensource/postgres.html

You'll need a plugin to help with the primary key generation - go and
look at Project WONDER - there is a plugin there.

http://wonder.sourceforge.net/

And David Teran has pulled out just the Postgres plugin

That should keep you busy until Match of the Day starts :-)

I'm new to WebObjects, well I haven't actually started yet, I'm just
deciding whether to use it for my next project. I've been looking at
the
various DBMS and things like Openbase and Frontbase seem a little
highly
priced for my initial needs especially when you can use MySQL for
free BUT
I'm not overly keen on using MySQL so I wondered if anyone was using
or had
used 4D, they have a JDBC driver etc.. and are reasonably priced.

I'm looking to use it for a web application.
