You can do some impressive things knowing just a little WO.
If you learn how to use D2W components from your pages you can do
quite a lot very rapidly. Doing this level of programming with other
languages is not simple at all and unless you are very experienced,
the result is hard to maintain, you get a "one-off" system with no
reuse.
If you learn all of WO it's just as hard as learning an equivalent
enviroment, which would be something like J2EE (EJB's) with Struts +
Hibernate, or Cayenne. Either way it's just as complex, and less
integrated. I'm not sure there are that many people actively using
Cayenne and Hibernate, for instance, such that it would be easier to
hire someone with experience and not have to teach it to them, as
compared to WO. And I don't think they would charge much less per
hour to do that kind of complex programming.
Don't forget some of the things you get automatically with WO that you
have to either implement or pay big big bucks to get with other
environments, including Monitor, easy localization, easy scaling up,
easy change of DB, performance benefits of caching EO's, etc.
There are a few "tiers" of developers:
tier 1 ASP, basic PHP), ColdFusion
tier 2 OO-PHP / OO JSP+Java / ASP.NET / basic WO
tier 3 J2EE using EJBs and Struts, mid-level WO
tier 4 advanced WO, Java + Cayenne + Hibernate (or similar kits),
WO JavaClient, true "n" tier systems.
You'll get paid by your tier and experience, not your technology, roughly.
There are now many pretty good WO books, plus the Apple stuff which is
not complete but is not bad at all. And no matter how many books you
read on any technology, nothing beats a good tutor or class to get
started in it. The skills you get with practice.
