As many have mentioned here, WebObjects is, at the very least, not
getting Apple's full attention.
Being a newbie, but not having tens of thousands for a WebSphere
environment, what advice would the more optimistic of you have for
someone who is:
1) Trying to learn a technology that will allow one to deploy
scalable, multi-user, data-driven web applications.
2) Learn a language that is "modern" and will be with us for at
least a few years (i.e. Java) (what good is that powerbuilder doing
me?)
3) Funding this out of personal capital (both time and money).
I've built websites using C, Perl, mod_perl, ColdFusion, some J2EE
and shell scripts :-)
Most of the technologies out there let's one do what one needs to.
It's just a tradeoff
of cost, time, support and maintainability. As an individual
contributor the question of
what to learn in order to be employable and/or happy is a difficult
one.
The job market right is difficult at best. If one prefers Java then
one must be familiar
with J2EE. However, one cannot get a job unless one has 3 years of
professional WebLogic or
WebSphere experience. That neatly eliminates almost all Java
developers. Funny, I guess those
employers aren't really interested in actually hiring anyone.
There is a ton of interest right now in .Net technologies. But who
wants to work on ASP on steroids?
Lots of Perl jobs. But my impression is that they are repetitive.
Everyone wants the same thing
done over and over. Nothing interesting or challenging going on in
that space.
PHP is a time-bomb waiting to happen. The issue is that the sites
generated with it are so riddled
with either performance or security problems that it's a horror show.
Or one can try and do something innovative with WO. With no support,
obstreperous tools, etc.
It's all just a matter of picking your poison. Mine is fruity with a
bitter overtone of Java.
The urge to create is too strong and I can do it faster with WO than
the alternatives.
Here's what I was able to find on netcraft.

WO in philadelphia - wanna cheesesteak with that?

I'd have to agree with every bit of this. Fortunately, I'm not doing
this to find a job. I'm learning WebObjects because (and it sounds
like you are a bit in this boat) I have many ideas running around in
my head and tired of not being able to implement them because of the
high cost of having someone do it in Websphere or the incredible angst
I have with hiring an ASP programmer and relegating my implementations
to NT servers.
So, based on your and others points, namely there is no perfect
answer, I've so far chosen to learn WO and hope for the best in terms
of support. Philip Moetteli also wrote to tell me about Gnustep. So,
it sounds like I won't be left without a platform to run on.
